YouTube opens a new metric that counts co-viewers on the TV screen

YouTube has added a co-viewed views metric that estimates the people watching the same video together on a television screen to its advanced analytics mode. The announcement came on 5 September 2026 in a Creator Insider video, and the metric went live on 31 August 2026. Revenue sharing, Partner Program eligibility and the public watch page counter all stay the same.

01 · WHAT HAPPENED?

What happened

YouTube has switched on a metric that estimates how many people watch a video together on a television screen. Called Views (co-viewed), it sits in the advanced analytics mode of YouTube Studio. The announcement came on 5 September 2026 in a Creator Insider video presented by YouTube creator liaison Rene Ritchie. PPC Land puts the channel at 910,000 subscribers and notes that the video dates the rollout to 31 August 2026.

Google's own help page keeps the definition short: the metric reports an ‘Estimated total view count including multiple people watching together'. It accounts for shared viewing on surfaces such as YouTube TV and the main YouTube app on television sets. The same page separately states that, from 24 August 2026, views are counted the moment a video starts to play across Shorts, long form and live streams. That is a different update, not the launch of the co-viewed number.

02 · THE DETAILS

The details

The counting logic is clearest in Google's own example: if a household of three watches the same video together twice, that registers as 6 co-viewed views. The same household appears as 3 viewers under Unique Reach, the metric that arrived in May 2026 and now sits beside co-viewed views in advanced analytics. The two answer different questions, since co-viewed counts every person in every session while unique reach counts the same person once. The help page also restates the neighbouring definitions, including engaged views, which count the times viewers stay past the opening seconds and exclude loop repeats.

How the estimate is produced is not documented by Google. According to PPC Land and Relevant Audience, it rests on statistical modelling fed by demographic patterns, video genre and viewing times, with no sensor counting people in the room. No accuracy rate, margin of error, model description or independent third party audit was published. Nothing changes on the money side: Partner Program earnings still run on engaged views and engaged watch hours, eligibility still runs on qualified views and qualified watch hours, and revenue sharing plus AdSense payouts follow the same basis. Public counts on the watch page are unchanged, and the co-viewed figure shows up in the channel owner's analytics. Processing takes up to 48 hours, so date ranges that include the last two days read low, and PPC Land suggests a custom range that leaves those days out.

03 · WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

First, the measurement gap being closed is a wide one. PPC Land reports more than 1 billion hours of YouTube watched daily on television screens, a 13.8 percent share of United States television viewing as of May 2026, and smart televisions in 82 percent of US households. An analytics screen that counted devices logged a single view while three people sat in front of it. Second, the new number enters commercial negotiations without an audit trail: it lives in the creator's dashboard, and a brand has no way to check it beyond asking for a screenshot. PPC Land flags that as a commercial risk.

Third, the metric never touches payouts. Since earnings and eligibility keep running on the older definitions, this reads as a presentation number that enlarges the reach story rather than a figure that feeds revenue. That reading is ours. We expect co-viewed numbers to reach sponsorship decks quickly, and buyers who do not ask which metric they are being sold will end up paying for the larger one.

04 · TURKEY

What it means for businesses in Türkiye

The sources carry no information specific to Türkiye. What follows is our reading. The practical list is still concrete. Businesses that publish on YouTube, or buy creator collaborations, should keep co-viewed views as a separate line in reporting and never add it to standard views. Collaboration contracts should name the metric that counts, the date range to be read and the exact screen a screenshot must come from, because there is no independent record to fall back on later.

Reporting calendars need to respect the 48 hour processing delay, so weekly reports read more accurately when the last two days are excluded through a custom range. Brands whose watch time leans towards the television screen have a second job on the creative side, since a video watched together in a living room needs different sound design, type size and pacing than one watched alone on a phone. Raising revenue forecasts on the strength of the new number would be a mistake, because payments still follow engaged and qualified views. That assessment is ours.

The UNALSOFT take

A change in measurement is a change in production. A film watched together on a television is built differently from one watched with divided attention on a second screen: the audio has to carry, the type has to read from across the room, and the opening has to speak to a household rather than to one pair of eyes. When we produce AI ad films, we separate the cut by delivery surface, and the new metric adds one more signal about which cut lands on which screen. Engagement and conversion data still decide the call.
